Jeweled Boxes/Bowls

I approached Susan  Emerson, a friend and fellow artist, to see if she would be interested in collaborating with me on clay boxes.  She agreed and the following is the result, but first a little about Susan:

Susan received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute.  She has taught arts and crafts at the Native American Aids Project, North Woods Discovery School, Shasta College Community Education, and the Shasta County Arts Council.  She is presently working with Far Northern Regional as a consultant/mentor in a pilot program with clients with cerebral palsy in marketing and developing their art work.

Artist Statement:

I was born into a family of artists and closet writers.  Inspired by my Iroquois and Russian background I am drawn to functional art used in every day life.  I use many types of mediums in my art work including things from nature and found objects.  This eclectic approach when combined with my love of color - in nature, paint, glass and resin - conveys the meaning and beauty behind everyday living.  Art for me is as crucial as breathing; it feeds me mentally, physically, emotionally and spirtually.

This piece was a collaboration between myself and Susan Emerson.  I was inspired to create boxes/bowls after seeing her wooden boxes covered with jewels.  We had fun working together and found the challenge of affixing beads and stones to my clay boxes/sugar bowls to be rewarding.

Bird on the Boat

This was another fun piece to work on.  When I finished it I wondered what we would call it.  It reminded me of an old fashioned iron, but also Noah's Ark.  Susan added the bird and the name simply came.
